NORDUnet peerings with the vBNS and other research networks in the US

 -------------------------------------
Last update 2000-04-13

This document contains up to date information about the peerings, please check back.

NORDUnet has a peering arrangement with vBNS, the very high performance Backbone Network Service in the United States. NORDUnet connects to the vBNS at the STARTAP in Chicago. STARTAP is a persistent infrastructure to facilitate the long-term interconnection and interoperability of advanced networking. Physically, STAR TAP connects with the Ameritech Network Access Point (NAP) in Chicago, as does the vBNS and other high-speed research networks, which makes the NORDUnet and vBNS peering possible.

Almost all of the research networks in the world interconnect at the Chicago NAP, making it easy to arrange peerings between NORDUnet and the other networks.

NORDUnet is currently arranging peerings at STAR TAP with the following national and international research networks, checkmark indicates that the peering is already operational.

NetworkURL for informationStatus
CA*net 3 http://www.canarie.ca Unicast peering is up. Multicast (MBGP/MSDP not yet ready in CA*net 3)
vBNShttp://www.vbns.net Working. Both unicast and multicast peering is implemented. NORDUnet accepts all the unicast routes that vBNS announces and sends a small list of unicast prefixes towards the vBNS,namely those that have been approved by the NSF and are part of ongoing research activities between Nordic institutions and institutions in vBNS. NORDUnet sends all the multicast routes and receives all their multicast routes, including transit routes.
ANL http://www.anl.gov Unicast peering is up and so is MBGP.
NRENhttp://www.nren.nasa.gov Multicast peering is up. Minimum set of unicast routes is exchanged, the core NORDUnet network numbers only.
SingAREN http://www.singaren.net.sg Peering is operational
NACSIS/SINET http://www.sinet.ad.jp Peering is operational
ESnet http://www.es.net Peering is operational.
APAN http://www.apan.net Peering is operational
Abilene http://www.ucaid.edu/abilene/ Not yet up at STARTAP. NORDUnet peers with Abilene in New York.
TAnet2 http://www.tanet2.net.tw Peering is operational

Peering between networks means that the networks have agreed on exchange of traffic. Peering can be restricted to certain subnetworks and certain types of services when necessary. From the user's point of view peerings mean that advanced research projects utilizing networks can be conducted between the organisations inside the peering networks. Peering means that direct connections between the peerings networks are possible - otherwise traffic would be exchanged via the public internet exchange points in different countries.
