Biography
As the University of Washington's Vice President for Technology, and a tenured faculty member in the Information School and Computer Science & Engineering, Ron Johnson is actively engaged in cyber-infrastructure oriented research projects involving Next Generation Network technologies and infrastructure; super-high resolution and/or low latency broadband/HD video and audio; and 'ocean observatory' submarine network technologies.
Ron is a co-founder of various organizations including Internet2, National LambdaRail (NLR) and the ResearchChannel, and was one of the initial GLIF participants. He serves as a Principal Investigator or co-PI on a number of active research projects, and he is a participant in other R&D activities such as the CineGrid and the Digital Well. In an earlier era, he helped establish the initial Internet, and his teams have created large scale regional networks as well as pioneering peering and exchange capabilities such as Pacific Wave and TransitRail. His groups have also developed internet technologies including Pine, and the key elements of IMAP, as well as various broadband streaming and interactive hi-res media capabilities.
Ron is Chairman of the Board of KEXP-FM/KEXP.ORG which is widely recognized as an innovative, influential global cultural force as a place "where the music matters".
