Operational Management of Lightpaths

This talk describes how the hybrid SURFnet6 network and the NetherLight Optical Exchange Point are operated.

The TL1 Toolkit Perl module was written to extract information from the optical equipment. This configuration and alarm information is stored in a MySQL database. The information is also used to automatically generate an NDL topology file of the network.

Furthermore, a monitoring tool based on Apache Tomcat, servlets and JSP was written to present the information via a web interface.

The talk concludes with open issues, like interdomain monitoring, global identifiers for lightpaths and interdomain operational procedures.
