Abstract
Several Ethernet extensions have been standardised by the IEEE in order to resolve some Ethernet shortcomings when using Ethernet in a WAN environment. Among these are MAC-in-MAC (IEEE 802.1ah) to better deal with VLANs and OAM (Operations, Administration and Maintenance) extensions. IEEE 802.1ah is being tested in a setup with SARA as the customer and NetherLight, the optical exchange point in the Netherlands, as the provider network. In this presentation, the theory of how IEEE 802.1ah works will be described, followed by our experiences, both from a customer as from a provider point of view.
