Network Measurement Systems

NORDUnet deploys a number of network measurement systems, both for production and experimental use. NORDUnet is also active in development of network measurement systems and technology.

If you're looking for network traffic statistics for the NORDUnet production IP network, you can find them here. Other publicly available network measurements can be found here.

Open Source Tools

A number of the network measurements done NORDUnet and the Nordic NRENs are locally developed open source tools. In particular, a number of such tools are available from UNINETT. The tools available here include Stager, Nemo, mping, web-based network maps, and Zino.

Measurement Systems in Nordic NRENs

The Nordic research and education networks deploy a number of network measurement systems. Below is a list of some of the systems; not that for security reasons, not all of these are available to the public.

If you have updates of comments to the below list, please contact Lars Fischer.

NORDUnet

BWCTL
Internet2 platform for measurement of available bandwidth, based on iperf. Available to the public on a per-project basis; contact Hans Fischer for details.
OWAMP
Internet2 platform for measurement of one-way latency. Available to the public, as for BWCTL.
RIPE TTM
The RIPE Test Traffic Measurement System. Not generally available to the public.
Zino
Traffic measurement and display platform, developed at UNINETT. Data is publicly available
IPPM
Experimental platform for the GEANT2 JRA1 project . Not publicly available.

UNINETT

Zino
Traffic measurement and display platform, developed at UNINETT. Data is publicly available.
NEMO
Traffic measurement visualization tool, developed at UNINETT. Publicly available.
Router, port, and line statistics
A number of tools for gathering and displaying router load, traffic on individual lines, latency, downtime, etc. Output from a number of tools is publicly available.
SCAMPI and LOBSTER
Experimental platforms for passive network measurement. Not publicly available.
Stager
Platform for gathering router statistics and netflow data for analysis and display, developed at UNINETT. Some data is publicly available.
GigaCampus measurement platform
Platform for systematic collection of network measurement data at the campus level. Not yet publicly available.

SUNET

BWCTL
Internet2 platform for measurement of available bandwidth, based on iperf. Available to the public.
OWAMP
Internet2 platform for measurement of one-way latency. Available to the public.
Zino
Traffic measurement and display platform, developed at UNINETT. Data is publicly available.
Geographical Loadmap
A map with load visualization, showing the same data as the Zino plot.
Router and port
Various router statistics are available from the SUNET statistics overview page.
RIPE TTM
The RIPE Test Traffic Measurement System. Not generally available to the public.
IPPM
Experimental platform for the GEANT2 JRA1 project . Not publicly available.

RHnet

MRTG
Traffic measurements, graphs publicly available.
Smokeping
Connectivity and latency measurements, graphs publicly available.
NetFlow
Used internally for accounting and anomaly detection. Data not publicly available

Forskningsnet

MRTG
Traffic measurements, graphs publicly available.
Netflow
Internal netflow system deployed for accounting.

FUNET

Zino
Traffic measurement and display platform, developed at UNINETT. Data is publicly available.

NORDUnet Measurement Workgroup

NORDUnet has set up a Network Measurement Workgroup. The aim of the workgroup is

  • to be a forum for the discussion of new or interesting approaches to network measurement
  • to spread knowledge about measurement software and platforms
  • to discuss and assist deployment of measurement systems
  • to ensure availability of measurement data about NORDUnet and member networks

The workgroup is informal and operates mostly by email discussion. The workgroup is open; anyone associated with Nordic research and education networking and interested in network measurement is welcome to join. Please contact Lars Fischer at NORDUnet if you are interested in joining the workgroup.
