IPv6 Activities in the Nordic Countries

NORDUnet and the member networks are actively participating in IPv6 related projects and developments. The purpose of this document is to collect information about current research and education related IPv6 activities in the Nordic countries. The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 won't happen in a day and both will co-exist.

IPv6 protocol requires new addresses for network interfaces. Nordic national research and education networks have registered their own IPv6 address blocks followingly:
FUNET has official IPv6 addresses, block name is 2001:0708::/32
UNINETT has official IPv6 addresses, block name is 2001:0700::/32
SUNET/NORDUnet has official IPv6 addresses, block name is 2001:06B0::/32
Forskningsnettet has official IPv6 addresses, block name is 2001:0878::/32

Recent events: see Nordic IPv6 workshop.

6NET Project

NORDUnet's member networks are heavily involved in 6NET, which is a joint EU commission project made by several NRENs and industry participants (Cisco, IBM, Sony, NTT Communications Corporation among others). The goal of the project is to build a large scale IPv6 production network in Europe for demonstrating new network applications. 6NET is 3 year project over 30 participants altogether. The contact person for NORDUnet's portion of the 6NET project is Jari Miettinen. See also www.6net.org and for the list of project participants. 6NET pushes the boundaries of IPv6 technology innovation with IPv6 Multicast

Nordic IPv6 Backbone and Connectivity

NORDUnet provides a separate IPv6 network with 1Gbit/s capacity linking Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Member networks may provide native or tunneled IPv6 connectivity to their clients in each country.

The NORDUnet IPv6 network is built on top of NORDUnets experimental "NorthernLight" lambda network infrastructure. The network is fully operational.
