NORDUnet's member networks have been heavily involved in 6NET, a joint EU commission project led by Cisco, with participation of several NRENs and industry partners (Cisco, IBM, Sony, NTT Communications Corporation among others). The goal of the project was to build a large scale IPv6 production network in Europe for demonstrating new network applications.
The 6NET project finished on 30 June 2005, after 3½ years of intensive collaboration between 100+ excellent engineers, 35+ organizations spread over 14 countries. In the final evaluation by the EU commission, the 6NET project was described as exceeding expectations and to have delivered breakthrough results.
The 6NET project has explored many aspect of IPv6 technology and improved both standards and practice in many areas. One important result of 6NET has been that most European research and education networks have implemented IPv6 as part of their standard service. NORDUnet, GÉANT, and many national networks today seamlessly support IPv4 and IPv6. 6NET has been instrumental in this.
NORDUnet A/S has been one of the principal contractors in the 6NET project. Assistant contractors in the Nordic area were Oulu Polytechnic, Center for Scientific Computing Ltd. (CSC), UNINETT A/S, University of Oulu, Invenia A/S and Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)
