NorthernLight lambda networking

What is lambda networking?
Definition taken from a paper by Steven Wallace: "Lambda networking, as it is properly defined by the telecommunications industry, is the technology and set of services directly surrounding the use of multiple optical wavelengths to provide independent communications channels along a strand of fiber optic cable."

NorthernLight is the name for Nordic lambda networking initiative and testbed. It is not affiliated with Northernlight.com and recognizes the brand they own.

On 1st August NORDUnet joined the worldwide "lambda" networking testbed by connecting to NetherLight via a 2.5 Gbit/s link between Stockholm-Amsterdam. The link was provided by TeliaSonera International and the equipment in Stockholm was donated by Cisco.

NetherLight in Amsterdam is connected to CERN in Geneva, CSnet in Prague, and StarLight in Chicago, and soon also UKlight in London, by 10 Gbit/s links.

Later this year NORDUnet's link to Amsterdam will be extended from Stockholm to Copenhagen, Helsinki and Oslo thus extending the testbed (called NorthernLight) to researchers in all the central Nordic countries.
